LA GRAN MAYORIA DE LOS INMIGRANTES NO SON VIOLENTOS NI CRIMINALES; NO LOS CULPEN A ELLOS/ THE VAST MAJORITY OF IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT CRIMINALS NOR VIOLENT.

QUIEN ES CULPABLE DE LA VIOLENCIA EN LOS ANGELES

Los Ángeles, California. A un lado de la Placita Olvera, uno de los centros de reunión de la comunidad latina de Los Ángeles, encontré dos camiones de carga con los restos de los autos quemados durante las recientes protestas. Apenas quedaban pedazos de las llantas y de los asientos. Todo era gris y cenizas. Eran autos sin chofer -robotaxis- de la empresa Waymo^[i]que suspendió sus servicios en el centro de la ciudad luego de perder cinco vehículos. Esos autos fueron presa fácil ya que se detienen automáticamente si hay una persona frente a ellos.

¿Quiénes son los responsables de la quema de autos y de los ataques a la policía? Hasta el momento hay cuatro arrestados^[ii], incluyendo a un indocumentado mexicano -con antecedentes criminales- que supuestamente tiró un cocktail molotov a los agentes durante las protestas, según reportó The Washington Times. Pero lo que sí está claro es que las organizaciones pro-inmigrantes y los manifestantes que participaron en las marchas de los últimos días no tienen la culpa de los actos vandálicos.

La diferencia es muy importante. Esas imágenes son usadas por el presidente Trump y por sus seguidores para sugerir que muchos de los inmigrantes son invasores violentos dispuestos a dañar a Estados Unidos. La realidad es muy distinta; la gran mayoría de los inmigrantes y de los manifestantes son pacíficos, no son criminales, pagan impuestos, y contribuyen a la economía del país pero sencillamente no están de acuerdo con las deportaciones ni con la separación de familias que promueve el gobierno de Washington. Por eso protestan.

Le pregunté sobre esto en una entrevista a la alcaldesa de Los Angeles, Karen Bass^[iii]. ¿Quiénes son los que iniciaron los actos violentos en Los Ángeles, quemando autos, atacando a la policía y llenando de grafiti edificios públicos y propiedad privada en el centro de la ciudad? “Creemos que vienen de las redes sociales”, me dijo la alcaldesa en el centro de operaciones de emergencia de la ciudad. “Pero no sabemos quiénes son…lo que sí sabemos es que no están vandalizando a la ciudad porque quieren ayudar a los inmigrantes; si les interesaran los inmigrantes no harían algo que atrajera las fuerzas armadas de Trump”. ¿Qué van a hacer los 700 infantes de marina, enviados por el presidente, si entran a la ciudad? “No tengo ni la menor idea de lo que van a hacer”, me contestó. “No necesitamos a los militares”.

La alcaldesa estaba preocupada por la imagen que el mundo tiene de Los Ángeles. “El 99 por ciento de la ciudad está en calma”, me dijo, aunque eso no es lo que aparece en las redes sociales y en los canales de televisión a nivel internacional. En la mente de la alcaldesa estaba la preparación de la ciudad -y su imagen- para los partidos del Mundial el próximo año y para la celebración de las Olimpiadas en el 2028.

El gobierno de México y sus consulados tampoco son responsables de la violencia en las calles de Los Ángeles. La secretaria del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, Kristi Noem, acusó equivocadamente a la presidenta de México, Claudia Sheinbaum, de incitar a la violencia. “Y por eso la condeno”, dijo Noem^[iv], en un evento en la oficina oval, frente a Trump. Pero la presidenta jamás incitó a la violencia en las calles de Los Ángeles. Al contrario. “Condenamos la violencia y llamamos a la comunidad mexicana a actuar de manera pacífica”, dijo Sheinbaum^[v]. Y luego añadió que la quema de patrullas parecía más “un acto de provocación que de resistencia”.

¿De dónde sacó esa mala información la secretaria Noem? Quién sabe. Pero una de las personas que debía estar mejor informadas en todo mundo no lo estaba y más bien parecía que quería buscarse un nuevo pleito con México.

Quizás estoy pidiendo mucho pero Donald Trump, a quien le gusta presumir de ser un “gran negociador”, tiene una oportunidad insuperable para detener la violencia en Los Angeles, para que los disturbios no se extiendan a otras ciudades y para buscarle una solución a los millones de indocumentados que no son criminales y que merecen quedarse legalmente en Estados Unidos. En un sorpresivo cambio de tono, Trump reconoció que sus políticas estaban afectando negativamente a los campesinos y a los trabajadores hoteleros y que pronto “vendrían cambios”^[vi]. Luego dejó entrever en redes sociales lo que podría ser un giro en su política migratoria. “Debemos proteger a los trabajadores del campo pero hay que sacar a los CRIMINALES de Estados Unidos”, escribió.

La violencia nunca es una alternativa viable. Eso los aprendimos tanto de Gandhi y Nelson Mandela como de Martin Luther King y Cesar Chávez. Y tampoco es aceptable en las calles de Los Angeles. Pero eso no significa que hay que quedarse callados ante los abusos de poder durante las deportaciones y las separaciones de familia.

Los Angeles ya le dijo que no a Trump. Ahora vamos a ver qué hace.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VIOLENCE IN LOS ANGELES?

LOS ANGELES – In one side of the Placita Olvera, a gathering place for the Latino community in Los Angeles, I saw two trucks carrying the remains of the cars burned during the recent protests. Just pieces of tires and seats. Everything was gray and ash. They had been driverless cars – robotaxis – owned by the Waymo company, which suspended its service on the downtown area after losing five of its vehicles. They were easy prey because they stop automatically when there's a person in front.

Who's responsible for the cars torched and the attacks on police? As of now there are four arrested, including one undocumented Mexican – with a criminal record – who allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at police during the protests, according to the Washington Times. But it's clear that pro-immigration organizations and the protesters who participated in the marches these last few days are not responsible for the vandalism.

The difference is very important. Those images are being used by President Trump and his supporters to suggest that many immigrants are violent invaders ready to damage the United States. The reality is very different. The great majority of the immigrants and protesters are peaceful, they are not criminals, they pay taxes and contribute to the national economy. But they simply oppose the deportations and family separations promoted by the government in Washington.

I asked about this in an interview with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Who are the people who started the violence in Los Angeles, burning cars, attacking the police and covering public and private buildings in the center of the city with graffiti? “We believe they come from the social networks,” she told me during the interview in the city's emergency operations center. “But we don't know who they are … What we do know is that they are not vandalizing the city because they want to help immigrants. If they are interested in the immigrants they would not do something that would attract the Trump armed forces.” What are the 700 US Marines, sent by the president, going to do if they enter the city. “I don't have the slightest idea of what they are going to do,” she replied.”We don't need the military.”

The mayor was worried about the world's image of Los Angeles. “Ninety nine percent of the city is calm,” she told me, although that's not what appears on social networks and TV channels around the world. Her mind was on the city's preparations – and image – for the World Cup soccer matches next year and the Summer Olympics in 2028.

The government of Mexico and its consulates also are not to blame for the violence on the streets of Los Angeles. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrongfully accused the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, with inciting the violence. “And I condemn her for that,” Noem said in an Oval Office event, with Trump present. But the Mexican president never incited the violence on the streets of Los Angeles. On the contrary. “We condemn the violence and call on the Mexican community to act in a peaceful manner,” Sheinbaum said. She later added that the torching of police cars appeared to be “more a provocation than an act of resistance.”

Maybe I am asking for too much, but Donald Trump, who boasts of being a “great negotiator,” has a grand opportunity to stop the violence in Los Angeles, to keep the disturbances from spreading to other cities and to seek a solution for the millions of undocumented migrants who are not criminals and deserve to remain legally in the United States. In a surprising change of tone, Trump recently recognized that his policies are negatively impacting farm and hotel workers and said “changes are coming.” Later, he wrote, “We must protect our Farmers, but get the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE USA.”

Violence is never a viable alternative. We learned that from Gandhi and Nelson Mandela as well as from Martin Luther King and Cesar Chávez. And it is not acceptable on the streets of Los Angeles. But that does not mean that we must remain silent in the face of the abuses of power during the deportations and the family separations.

Los Angeles already said no to Trump. Now let's see what he'll do.
